Employment Opportunity-Student Wellness Support Coordinator


Maskwacis Cultural College is an Indigenous post-secondary institution located on Samson Cree Nation, in Maskwacis, AB. Our mission is to educate with discipline and compassion so that Indigenous and other communities will be inspired by creative, intelligent individuals. We are seeking a motivated, compassionate and enthusiastic individual to join our team in the full-time position of Student Wellness Support Coordinator.


Summary

The Student Wellness Support Coordinator is responsible for providing holistic support to the existing students at MCC. The Student Wellness Support Coordinator will identify and develop workshops and activities that will ensure students are successful in their education goals. The incumbent will be required to build a network of support for the students within the Four Nations and surrounding communities, providing referrals when needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide mentoring and coaching to existing students

• Assess the needs of the students to ensure the appropriate supports are available • Assist students in problem solving and studying techniques to achieve their educational goals

• Identify, coordinate and/or create workshops entitled “Student Success Workshops” to assist students with wellness success (i.e. Stress Management, Help-Seeking Behaviors, Wellness Workshops, Time Management, etc.)

• Identify and communicate college resources available to students

• Provide a safe environment for students to ask questions and learn

• Coordinate the development of and/or the amendment/update of policies to support Maskwacis Cultural College related to, but not limited, to areas addressing the following: Healthy Academic Environment, Student Success, Talking Circles for Use with Students, Student Code of Conduct, Student Emergency Assistance and any other policy creations or updates as deemed necessary

• Build networks outside the Four Nations and represent MCC by attending meetings as determined by the Dean of Academic Programs and approved by the President • Provide referrals for students to access services within the Four Nations and the surrounding communities

• Plan and coordinate orientation sessions for new and incoming students at the onset of every new academic year

• Assist in completing the Mental health annual report to funders about student access and successes as deemed necessary by the funder; locally, provincially and nationally

• Deliver mental health promotion and prevention programming including presentations to students, staff, parents and/or other community members that increase wellbeing, resilience, protective factors, promote early identification of issues and address risk factors

• Build capacity with college staff, delivering wellness presentations and programming

• Organize and facilitate college and community wide Mental Health events and awareness campaigns

• Facilitate access of MCC students to other community resources and partners (eg. Police, Ermineskin Women’s Shelter, Victim Services, Mental Health Practitioners, Child Welfare Caseworkers, Post-Secondary Funders, Four Nations Chiefs/Council Support Offices, Maskwacis Health Centre)

• Connect students to existing community mental health supports and services within the province of Alberta

• Connect students to existing community mental health supports and services within the province of Alberta

• Collaborate with service providers in the community to maximize service efficiencies and to advocate for unmet mental health needs for students attending college (Alberta Health Services and other Post-Secondary institutions) \

• Help mentor the student body by attending every Maskwacis Cultural College Student Council meeting, adhering to appropriate policies and procedures

• Share and exchange knowledge and resources between agencies

• Attend scheduled meetings as determined/assigned

• Any other duties as assigned

Qualifications

• A Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Education, Arts or related social sciences field

• At least 2 years' experience in related field

• Knowledge of supports within the Four Nations

• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft software, including Word, Excel, etc.

• Willing to participate in ongoing learning

• Ability to Build Rapport with Students, Peers and Faculty

• Flexibility and Adaptability

• Strong organizational skill set

• Clear criminal record

• Access to own vehicle/transportation

• Willing to adhere to an oath of confidentiality
